Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread

Serves 8


  • 4 cups (500 g) all purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons (56 g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (bicarbonate)
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113 g) butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) buttermilk, divided
  • 1/4 cup (56 g) butter, melted


Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 C). Grease a baking a sheet.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add 1/2 cup butter, the egg, and one cup of the buttermilk to the dry ingredients, mixing until combined.

Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and knead briefly. Shape the dough into a round shape and place it on the greased baking sheet. Cut an X into the top of the dough.

Whisk together the melted butter and remaining buttermilk. Brush the loaf with the mixture.

Bake for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Brush the loaf with the buttermilk mixture every 15 minutes while baking. Allow to cool slightly before cutting.
